Nearshore Restoration at Fort Townsend State Park
Herrera conducted a feasibility assessment and restoration design in support of coastal restoration at Fort Townsend State Park on Port Townsend Bay for the Northwest Straits Foundation (NWSF). The former military reservation included a road across the high bluff leading down to nearshore fill associated with a dock that once extended into deep water. The goal of the project was to restore nearshore processes through the removal of fill and pilings, improvement of public access, and enhancement of beach and backshore habitats. The technical analysis of the feasibility study was accompanied by artistic renderings of alternatives to assist NWSF communicate the project to a wider public audience deeply concerned with alterations to the only beach access point across three miles of shoreline. After helping obtain public approval, Herrera completed final designs and secured permits for construction.
