White River at Pacific Right Bank Flood Protection Project Planning and Design
Residential areas and a large public park are prone to flooding along the White River in the City of Pacific, Washington immediately north of the Pierce-King County boundary. Herrera is leading a multidisciplinary team of consultants in assisting King County with development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate alternatives for effective flood protection and ecological improvements, and in a parallel study to characterize historical dumpsite waste beneath the park and evaluate options for cleaning up that waste as part of the flood improvement project. Following completion of the EIS, Herrera’s team will lead design of the preferred alternative.
The project will remove an old, low elevation levee and build a combination setback levee/floodwall system to protect residential neighborhoods, commercial businesses, and city streets from flooding while allowing the river to have more room to occupy and deposit large amounts of sediment.
