The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is replacing an aging timber bridge at the upper pond spillway in Miramontes Ridge Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County. The pond upstream supports the California red-legged frog, a federally threatened species. Downstream, an actively eroding channel threatens both the crossing and the pond’s earthen dam. The project will replace the bridge and stabilize the channel to protect the crossing, the dam, and the frog habitat the pond sustains. Herrera, working under structural engineering lead BCA, is providing the hydrology and hydraulic analysis and civil design for grading, channel stabilization, and restoration.
