IC/ID Field Screening Guidance Manual and Training
Herrera worked with King County to update the 2013 Illicit Connection and Illicit Discharge Field Screening and Source Tracing Guidance Manual (IC-ID Manual). Updates to the IC-ID Manual were informed by two feedback workshops for municipal staff, a literature review on updated and new IC-ID methodologies and indicators, and a review of data from municipal illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE) programs. The updated IC-ID Manual was published in May 2020 and is available on the Washington Stormwater Center’s website.
Eight training sessions were held on the updated IC-ID Manual in 2020 with more than 200 attendees, the majority of whom were municipal staff from western Washington. Originally planned to be in-person trainings, the COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to reformat and present the trainings on a virtual platform, making them easily accessible for professionals across the region. The trainings included an overview of the IC-ID Manual including key updates in the 2020 version of the manual, a small group exercise to find the sources of pollution in a hypothetical scenario, and live demonstrations and prerecorded videos of field equipment usage, indicator tests, and sampling techniques.
In addition to the 2013 publication of the original IC-ID Manual, 14 videos were made demonstrating specific indicator tests and giving an overview of the manual. For the 2020 update, 6 additional videos were made. All 19 videos are now posted on the Washington Stormwater Center’s YouTube channel, for future training and education on field screening and source tracing methodologies and indicator tests based on the IC-ID Manual.
