Astoria Nordic Heritage Park
The Astoria Scandinavian Heritage Association sought to create a public park in downtown Astoria, Oregon, to celebrate the cultural heritage of Nordic and Scandinavian immigrants who came to Oregon’s North Coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Developed and refined with community input, the park features a large plaza with a Midsommer pole, interpretive signage, granite pillars for each of the five Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) and a well-planned and accessible layout. Herrera worked closely with the project landscape architect (West Studios) to conceptualize park elements and layout and to assist with community engagement. Our team led the stormwater and utility planning and design as well as modifications to existing access and parking. The park was dedicated and opened to the public in summer 2022.
