Eliza Spear, PWS
I am an ecologist and found my way to this career through a love of natural sciences and the outdoors. At Herrera, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in a variety of projects which include wetland and stream delineation and characterization, restoration and mitigation planning and aquatic vegetation management. In my free time, I’m finding any which way to get out on the water.
Proudest Moment on the Job:
I loved working on the Hidden Lake Dam Removal project with my colleagues. We successfully planned and designed the removal of an earthen dam and the re-establishment of a Boeing Creek stream channel in Shoreline, Washington. I learned a lot about evaluating and communicating the intent behind restoration designs on this project and am enjoying seeing the landscape evolve over time as we perform post-construction monitoring at the site.
Favorite Quote
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
