Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is much more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. It’s also a natural byproduct of waste decomposition at landfills. Herrera helped the City of Seattle address problems with the gas extraction system at the Interbay facility (a closed landfill) and, thereby, better manage methane gas emissions—which is critical in battling climate change and complying with environmental standards. We identified causes of system failure that trigger high methane alarms, and we developed a solution that enabled the City to maintain system function and reduce maintenance issues.
