Congratulations to the City of Portland: World’s First Salmon-Safe City!

Based on a systemic approach across City operations to improve water quality and restore salmon habitat, the City of Portland has become the first Salmon-Safe city in the world.  Salmon-Safe is an independent organization devoted to restoring watersheds through voluntary certification programs that require fish- and wildlife-friendly design and management practices.  Herrera has been working with Salmon-Safe since 2007 to assist them in developing the standards for their voluntary certification programs that require fish- and wildlife-friendly design and management practices.  This certification protocol benchmarks habitat-friendly performance requirements throughout the entire development process, including site conservation planning, stormwater planning, water quality guarantees, and long-term maintenance and management practices.  Most recently Herrera has been supporting Salmon-Safe in assessing applicants and reviewing their activities for compliance with Salmon-Safe standards prior to achieving certification. Congratulations to the City of Portland for leading the way in holistic approaches to watershed health.
