California Creeks: Stabilizing Entrada Way, Protecting La Honda Creek, and Keeping the Road Open

By Stacie Chapman

Herrera, with our partner Lotus, is working with San Mateo County Department of Public Works on an ongoing effort to stabilize a creek-adjacent roadway and bank at Entrada Way, pairing urgent risk reduction with a clear path to long-term resilience.

Over the course of several years, the hydraulically undersized crossing of La Honda Creek at Entrada Way has accumulated sediment upstream of the crossing, triggering significant channel migration. This channel migration, accentuated by flooding events in 2017 and 2018, has eroded the left bank and a portion of the Entrada Way road prism, endangering this key roadway. Herrera is developing final design plans and specifications for an interim project to stabilize the road prism and redirect the creek into a more infrastructure friendly alignment until a more permanent solution(bridge) is built. Design elements include bank stabilizing engineered log structures (ELSs) to support the left bank and create hydraulic roughness to discourage further channel migration, vegetated soil lifts to provide additional bank stabilization at higher flows allowing for more planting area, and widening and realigning La Honda Creek.

Herrera has:

  • Led hydraulic and geomorphic analysis, using a 2D hydraulic model to inform engineering design,
  • Prepared final design plans, specifications and cost estimate for creek channel, ELS, and planting improvements,
  • Led public outreach and private landowner meetings with the County to inform project design and solicit feedback,
  • Will conduct construction oversight of stream channel work, ELS placement, and vegetated soil lift installation.

As project design lead, we are collaborating with a cross-discipline team of stormwater engineers, permit experts, structural engineers, geologists, and surveyors supporting San Mateo County in this work.
