To decrease wildlife-airplane interactions caused by stormwater facilities, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation Division partnered with Herrera to create design guidance for BMPs that minimizes their attractiveness to wildlife, thereby complying with FAA safety objectives, while still meeting stormwater quality and quantity requirements administered by the Washington State Department of Ecology and supporting other wildlife protections such as the Endangered Species Act.

This is the first manual of its kind in the U.S., combining stormwater management, habitat, and airport safety in one document. This manual addresses the problem’s causes (design), not the symptoms (wildlife), and realizes that effective stormwater facility designs need to be proactive, not reactive to wildlife attraction concerns. The manual won several awards including a gold award from the Seattle American Council of Civil Engineering Companies (ACEC).
