Welcome to the third edition of our “You can recycle that?” blog series where we give tips on how to recycle some “hard to recycle” items.
In honor of America’s Recycles Day (celebrated on November 15th), we wanted to highlight Herrera’s involvement with Ridwell.
Ridwell is a local Seattle company started by a 6-year old (Owen) and his dad (Ryan). Ridwell’s four recycling/reuse core categories include:
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Plastic film
- Threads (clothing, fabric, and shoes)
Although Ridwell doesn’t have a business program yet, we have set up a collection station in our office and two employees have volunteered to transport recycling/reuse items to their homes to put in their porch collection bins.
Since May 2019, Herrera employees have recycled the following through Ridwell:
- > 130 pounds of batteries
- > 100 pounds of plastic film
- > 70 pounds of threads
- > 20 pairs of shoes
- > 60 light bulbs
Ridwell also has a rotating 5th category which has included some of the following items over the past two years:
- Jewelry
- Holiday lights
- Food takeout utensils
- Printer cartridges
- Portable electronics
- Cords, cables, and chargers
- Wine corks
- Plastic lids and bread ties
- Backpacks and school supplies
- Plastic plant pots
- Towels, sheets, and linens
- Eyeglasses
- Leftover Halloween candy
Ridwell is looking at expanding to Portland, Oregon next where we also have a Herrera office.
