Shannon McKernan

Scientist

I have always found joy in natural spaces. As an environmental geologist, I get to apply my love and understanding of earth processes, chemistry, and policy towards improving the environment we are all a part of. I am excited to do this work with Herrera through site characterization and remediation of soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and air contamination. Outside of work, I enjoy creativity in the kitchen, being outside, and reading.

M.S. Geological Sciences, University of Oregon
B.S. Geology and Zoology, University of Florida
Favorite Quote:
“The same stream of life that runs through the world runs through my veins.” -Rabindranath Tagore
Favorite Species:
Horsetails (Equisetidae). They are considered a living fossil that first appeared in the fossil record more than 400 million years ago! They have such a unique range of uses through human history and I always get excited to see them growing during the spring and summer.
Hidden Talent:
Baking. I love experimenting with different types of flour and perfecting my sourdough loaf.
