The Bacon Creek Quarry restoration project is a component of the Seattle City Light Skagit River/Newhalem Second Tunnel Project, which will develop a second tunnel to optimize the efficiency of the existing hydroelectric facilities at Newhalem. The spoils from tunnel construction will be used to fill in an abandoned gravel quarry to its original surface elevation. The site will then be revegetated with native species with the ultimate goal of re-establishing the conifer forest that previously occurred on the site. Herrera brings a specialized skill set to this project, based on extensive previous experience in revegetating difficult sites. Herrera is developing concept plans, weed management plans, detailed grading plans, restoration sequencing plans, salvage of native materials, and conducting oversight of the revegetation efforts.
