Herrera’s Work to Improve Site Conditions at Seattle’s Waterway 20

Located adjacent to Lake Union and west of Gas Works Park in Seattle lies Waterway 20; a state-owned parcel of land managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). One of several waterway management areas along the lake, the upland portion of the site has been occupied by the Seattle Police Department Harbor Patrol (HP) for over 50 years, with no access available to the public.

Currently, Herrera is conducting a Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment, collecting soil and groundwater samples in historic fill soils for laboratory analysis. Data obtained will inform the planning and design of a project to redevelop the western portion of the site. Conceptual site improvements under consideration include restoring the beach area, providing ADA public access to the waterway, and having a portal for boaters to launch kayaks into Lake Union.

This work is related to a larger effort by the City to complete a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) of sediment contamination along Gas Works Park.
